The 1951 Flame

Foreword

The Senior Class of 1951 is proud to present The 1951 Flame, the first an-
nual for the Big Walnut School. The name for the annual was chosen after
discussion with the students and serious consideration by the members of the
annual staff. After the school colors, red and gold, were selected, the colors
were linked to those of the 'flame' of a fire. The fire colors are cheerful, dra-
matic, and interesting. So we desire the Big Walnut annual to portray in its
color and name the joy of school life and the dramatic events in plays and
athletics woven together in an interesting way. "Flames" can be damaging;
but if properly controlled, they can be constructive. They provide warmth
and cheer for our lives, and we hope The 1951 Flame will shed the warmth
and cheer of this year as we look back on it from the future.

The theme of this annual is centered on The Golden Eagles, the nickname
of the school. We see the Golden Eagles as an Indian nation, the school build-
ings as their tepees, the superintendent as their chief, and the classes as tribes.
The action of the year is shown in "pow wows." The project is supported by
"smoke signals" sent out by advertisers from The 1951 Flame.

SUNBURY BUILDINGS

The building at the left below is occupied by the Sunbury grade school and
also houses the temporary office of the superintendent. Constructed in 1878,
it has served many years. The building on the right is the one which the high
school is using. It is, of course, crowded for the enrollment; but with the re-
pairs which are needed so badly, it will serve the grade school well when
the new building can be occupied by the high school.

GALENA BUILDING

The building above houses, at present, the Galena grades and the
Junior High School. A considerable sum was spent on this building in the
past year so it is in good condition. Modern lighting has been installed, and
the flooring and walls have been refinished. Several of the rooms have
new green blackboards, and there is a complete new section of building in
the back.

DEDICATION

We, the Senior Class of 1951, dedicate this first Big Walnut Annual, The
1951 Flame, to the success of the newly consolidated school and to all those
who have in any way helped to make this unification a success.

We fully realize that this has taken much effort on the part of our school
board and Superintendent and that it was made possible only through the
support of the citizens of our school district.

As the new building for Big Walnut High School continues toward com-
pletion, we hope that the spirit of unity in the school and between the com-
munities will continue to grow.

SENIOR CLASS

The Class of 1951 is proud to have the opportunity of being the first graduating class of
Big Walnut High School. The consolidation of Galena and Sunbury is a success which will
be complete upon entrance into the beautiful new building.

During the first semester of school, much attention was given to senior pictures which were
taken by Cubberly Studios of Delaware. Invitations were ordered along with caps and
gowns. The class motto, "Knowledge comes but wisdom lingers" was chosen. Blue and
white were selected as class colors, and the yellow rose as the class flower.

As a social event the class enjoyed a Christmas party at the home of Grace Ellen Miller.
Twenty-eight attended on a 12 below zero night. The Seniors, of course, look forward to the
privilege of being guests at the Junior-Senior Banquet on May 12.

The most important project of the school year has been the production of the first Big Wal-
nut annual. The vast amount of work it has required is quite evident; the Seniors are very
proud to present The 1951 Flame.

To close their years in high school, the class is looking toward their senior play and bac-
calaureate; and, of course, most of all, Commencement on May 25, with Rev. Homer Felty as
speaker.

Senior Class History

GALENA

September 6, 1939 started a new and thrilling life for all
of the six year olds at Galena, for this was to be their first
day at school. They were to meet many new friends whom
they would never lose.

On this day everyone was quiet and shy, but heir
teacher, Miss Terry, soon made them feel at home. It
wasn't long before all of the boys and girls were laughing
and talking together, having a wonderful time. Of those
who started that day there are five who have remained
together through twelve years of schooling. They are Betty
Bolton, Dayna Bricker, Eldon Chambers, Frank Linnabary
and Russell Stockwell.

This class had Miss Terry as a teacher in the first and
second grade; Miss Lott in the third; Miss DeMass in the
fourth; Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Ross, and Mrs. Shear in the fifth;
and Mrs. Horlocker in the sixth grade. Phyllis Rose joined
the class in the fourth grade, and JoAnn Hill in the fifth.
The most thrilling event of the year was at Halloween time.
Everybody brought his Halloween costume to school, put it
on at noon, and then paraded through all of the school
rooms. After that the teachers picked the funniest and
most horrible costumes, and everyone celebrated with a
party.

In 1944 the class graduated from the sixth grade into
Junior High. Everyone was now in the same study halls as
the high school students, and all had the same teachers.
In the seventh grade they welcomed Nancy Brown and in
the eight grade Scott Mickle joined them. Miss Campbell
was the seventh and eighth grade homeroom teacher.

In September, 1947, the class started their first year of
high school. Mrs. Smith was their homeroom teacher and
class advisor. The seniors felt the freshmen should be
initiated. Everyone survived, however, and enjoyed a party
on the second day.

As sophomores there were thirteen in the group includ-
ing two new members, Marie McCoy and Eugene Webb.
The first thing in store was the class rings ordered in Oc-
tober and received in February. When the rings arrived
the sophomores were the most important people in the
school - or maybe it was the fingers which wore the rings.
Marie McCoy and Jim Cantrell left the class and two new
members Dave Meloy and Harry Hughes, were welcomed.
Several activities of this year were a Halloween carni-
val, turkey raffle, Christmas party, and scrap drive.

The junior year of this class began with twelve mem-
bers. The first activity was the Junior play, the "Spooky
Tavern," a mystery-farce presented on November 10, 1949.
Mr. Furniss was the class advisor. For the Halloween
Carnival, Dayna Bricker was chosen as the Junior can-
didate for queen. Bingo and the fun house were their
booths for this event. A turkey was also raffled, and
programs were sold at the Galena-Sunbury game as a
means of making money.

Thus, ended eleven years of education, the twelfth to be
spent as the Big Walnut Senior Class.

SUNBURY

As the Sunbury beginners sat in the classroom that
first morning, September 6, 1939, they began to notice
the other boys and girls, the pretty goldfish in the back of
the room, and their teacher, Miss Tathem. Soon all were
getting along nicely. Those who started that day twelve
years ago and who are still members of the class are:
Nelda Barnhard, Kyle Compton, David Chaney, Charles
Conklin, Joan Crowl, Ross Day, Marilyn Edwards, Mary
Lou Forgrave Edwards, Clara Bell Erb, Joan Fletcher, Rus-
sell Fravel, Gary Girberd, June Huddlestun, Neil Johnson,
Don Longshore, Grace Ellen Miller, Rachel Murphy, Nor-
mand Townley, Joe Walker and Nancy Williamson.

During their years in grade school, the class was under
the tutelage of Miss Bond in the second grade, Miss Love or
Miss Van Fossen in the third, Miss Hogue in the fourth,
Miss Beattie in the fifth, and Mrs. Graumlick in the sixth.
Allen Smith joined the class in the second, Eloise Fisher in
the third, Joyce Ward in the fourth, and Emogene Skaggs
in the sixth. While in the second, the class helped in an
operetta presented by all the grades; and in the sixth they
presented a play entitled "The Old Cross Patch."

Finally, they were in Junior High! What a thrill! Three
new students came into the seventh grade - Georgie Green,
Mary Alice Richardson, and Lou Stelzer. Mr. Crawford was
the teacher.

The year that followed, they consider the finishing touch
to their primary education. They were faithfully guided by
Mr. Neilson, the "grand" daddy of Sunbury School. The
class was well represented on the Eighth Grade Test with
first, second and third place winners in the county. Do
you remember "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"? This
class presented this play the night they were given their
diplomas for completing eight years of schooling. Mary
Alice Barney joined the class during this year.

The turning point of their schooling came when they
entered high school in the fall of 1947. Mrs. Tarpy was
the freshman advisor. The initiation party was survived,
having been planned by the sophomores so that it
wouldn't, they all realized later. Since the class was taking
dancing lessons, all participated in the freshman dance at
Christmas time.

Mrs. Rowedda was advisor for the sophomore year.
The main event was a super Valentine Dance.

As juniors, Mrs. Tarpy was again advisor. This was the
busiest year with all the things the juniors have to do.
Class rings were ordered and were soon being worn
by everyone but juniors. Then came the junior play, "The
Divine Flora," which everyone enjoyed. Next, was the
very big event, the Junior-Senior banquet and prom. The
class wanted the decorations to be different as every class
does, so they decided to build a miniature gay nineties
town. Work was begun weeks in advance to make it a
big success even though it poured down rain, as it usually
does at prom time.

The class has been well represented in sports and other
activities during its years in high school. The class was
proud of their Homecoming Queen and All-Sports Queens,
Mary Alice Richardson and Joan Crowl. Normand Townley
was honored by receiving a Dispatch scholarship as a
freshman and a trip to Florida in a Temperance league
Contest as a junior. Ross Day was a member of the Var-
sity Basketball team in 1948 when the Delaware County
Basketball Championship was won for the last time and
was selected as representative to Boy's State his junior
year. Grace Ellen Miller was selected as representative to
Girl's State.

So we bring the Sunbury Class of 1951 up-to-date. The
events and honors of the current year will be found on the
Senior class page. Joining with the senior class of Galena
has necessitated adjustments, but many new and lasting
friendships have been formed during the year in Big Wal-
nut High School.

Class Prophecy

by Mary Alice Richardson

It was the night before graduation,
When all though the schoolhouse,
Not a creature was stirring,
Except one little lockermouse.

He kicked his pal,
Who beside him lay,
To remind him that soon
It would be "the" day.

Downstairs they ran
As fast as they could,
To climb into a chest
Constructed of wood.

Said one to the other
In joyful glee
"Aren't we fortunate,
The future to see?"

With a push of a button,
On a panel by his side,
The present disappears,
1965 abides.

All the '51 grads are assembled.
A reunion is going strong,
All are present-in good health
In New York-at Club Sarong.

With children present,
Husbands and wives too,
A census is taken
Which totals 692.

There's a banker, a lawyer,
A doctor, a teacher,
A secretary, a carpenter,
An accountant, a preacher.

There are homemakers galore
And three spinsters too,
One wealthy bachelor,
One cobbler of shoes.

Louella Parsons has keen competition,
Mildred Burke has long been done,
Charley McCarthy has been replaced
All accomplished by the class of '51.

The biggest bubble blower
Is among celebrities,
With the champion chimney cleaner
And the sweetie of strip tease.

One grad has his share
Of ups and downs,
He's an elevator operator
In a nearby town.

A beautician, a salesman,
A scientist-true,
A janitor and chef,
All pass in review.

The cutest cuticle cutter
In the world of manicure,
Is seated by an author
Of fiction, light but pure.

A professional baby sitter
Is chatting joyously,
With another pal and grad,
A breeder of purple pansies.

One of the grads
Is really in the dough.
As a baker at Omar,
He makes bread light as snow.

With knowledge of the future,
Of their friends so true,
The mice press the magic button
1951 comes through.

Comfortably, silently, the tiny mice retire,
As Old Sol appears
To begin a day which will prove
The future's ever near.

JUNIOR CLASS

The Junior class of forty-three members began this year under the leader-
ship of Mrs. Cross and Mr. Furniss.

Class rings were ordered early in the fall and the class is very proud of
the fact that these rings will be the first to have the Big Walnut crest.

The big event of the junior class during the first semester was the presenta-
tion of the class play, "Doctor's Orders", under the direction of Mrs. Rowed-
da. The play proved to be quite a success and was enjoyed by everyone.
The juniors enjoyed the event from the first planning to the final curtain.

The juniors and seniors are looking forward to the first junior-senior ban-
quet to be held in Big Walnut High School on May 12. According to the
plans which have been formed the occasion promises to be a memorable af-
fair.

On September 5, 1950, fifty-six Sunbury and Galena sophomores united in
the newly consolidated Big Walnut High School, under the advisorship of
Mrs. Sterbenz.

The class has been well represented in the various activities of the school.
As the important event of their year they sponsored a round and square

F. H. A.

Under the capable leadership of the faculty advisor, Mrs. Cross, and the president, Nancy Williamson, the FHA
had a successful year.
The year's theme was "Happier homes, the foundation of a better world."
A nursery school was sponsored during PTA meetings, Christmas cards were sold, and a carnival booth and
basketball concessions were a part of their activities.
To further interest in home economics, they celebrated National FHA week, had charge of a Grange program
with the FFA, and held a discussion of teen-age problems with several mothers assisting.
Social Events for the year were the FHA Birthday party, formal initiation for new members, a skating party, and
the All-Sports Dance. The climax for the year was the Mother-Daughter Banquet.
Among the other activities for the year were donations to World Christmas Festival and to the polio drive, a
bake sale, a chapel program for Thanksgiving, and a children's Christmas Party.
The membership of the FHA has more than doubled since the consolidation.

The Big Walnut Chapter of Future Farmers of America is a chartered local unit of the Ohio Association of
FFA, which is chartered by the National Organization of Future Farmers of America. This program is carried on in
connection with the Vocational Agriculture program, under provisions of the Smith-Hughes Act.

The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is to develop agricultural leadership, cooperation, and
citizenship.

This year the Chapter participated in the State Judging Contest and sent delegates to the District and State
Conventions. The members of the Chapter exhibited a Conservation Booth at the State Fair. As a means of meet-
ing its financial obligations, the chapter cooperated with the Y-Teens in operating a concession stand at the Big
Walnut football games.

The Big Walnut Chapter rated Silver in the annual Parliamentary Procedure contest in District competition, and
climaxed its activity by entering the Public Speaking Contest.

The Y-Teens have experienced an interesting year in close co-operation with the Community YWCA Unit. The two
groups have held joint meetings every other month, and the programs have been interesting and worthwhile. One
meeting featured a World Fellowship program; another the problems of the Migratory worker, and the last, Family
and Home Relationships.

Several big events of the school year were staged by the Y-Teens. One of the most important undertakings was
the Homecoming for the school. This year it was held at the Ashley game on October 20 and was followed by a
dance held in the gaily decorated gym. The details of the event may be found on page forty-eight.

The biggest social event of the Y-Teen Club is usually the wiener roast given for prospective members and the
football squad. This year the roast was held following the Granville game on October 6 in the field at the South-
worth home. Approximately sixty attended and everyone had a good time with plenty to eat.

During the year the Y-Teens made several donations to worthwhile funds. They made a special effort to assist
the YWCA in sending toys to the migratory children.

A very special event, planned for the spring, was the Mother-Daughter Banquet on April 24.

The money to finance these various projects was earned at the concession held during the football games in
co-operation with the FFA. This money will also help to send at least two girls to Y-Teen camp from the Club.

The Big Walnut Chapter of the National Honor Society is composed of eleven senior members. The activ-
ities for the year were limited as the primary purpose of the organization is honorary rather than social.

An impressive initiation for the junior members was held in an assembly program on March 20th. The eleven
students who received this honor were: Shelly Arbuckle, Barbara Carter, Peggy Cheadle, Ida Hartsook, Sue Lenhart,
David Meloy, David Miller, Paul Miller, Dick Moore, and James Whitney.

The National Honor Society Banquet was held on April 18, at Ashley High School. It was a very pleasant and
worthwhile occasion.

Since the officers for 1950 and 1951 were elected before the consolidation of Galena and Sunbury, there were
two sets of officers. They are listed below.

The Junior class play, "Doctor's Orders," was presented on December 21, 1950. It was Big Walnut High School's
first play and featured the combined efforts of Galena and Sunbury dramatists.

The play was a three act comedy concerning a case of embezzlement in the Madden Department Store. Miss
Letty Madden was the major stockholder, and cousin Adolph, the store manager. Miss Letty and Adolph disagreed
over the question of who was responsible for the theft. Cousin Adolph was trying to have Miss Norris, his secretary,
convicted of the charge, and Miss Letty was convinced that the girl was innocent. After a hilarious sequence of events
brought on by Miss Letty's visit to a psychiatrist and her subsequent attempts to get rid of her inhibitions, she
and a lawyer named Steve Harmann managed to prove that Adolph was really the guilty party. Miss Letty got
her man in the process, and the play ended happily for all except Adolph.

the capable direction of Mrs. Rowedda.

The plot gets under way when Al is approached by Don Turner who wants to start a new comic strip based
on Irma's zany doings. In order to do this, Al steps out of the picture leaving Don to become intimately acquainted
with Irma. All proceeds smoothly until Irma gets the idea that Don has proposed to her and begins to plan her
approaching marriage. However, all ends well when she discovers that Don is already married and that Al is
really her type after all.

Near the end of October the Senior Class had the important task of selecting an Annual Staff for the first Big
Walnut High School Annual. The editor of the staff was appointed by the faculty advisor, Mrs. Richey. The rest of
the group were elected by the class.

The first task was to select a name and colors for the annual. In doing this, the staff adopted the school colors
of red and gold and chose the name, The Flame as explained in the Foreword. The next step was to have pictures
taken of the various groups and activities; then, the annual went to the engravers and the printers by March 31.
Meantime the staff carried on a sales, advertising, and booster campaign for financing.

The first Senior Class of Big Walnut High School proudly presents The 1951 Flame to you in hopes that it will
bring many pleasant memories in the future.

Newsreporters

Betty Bolton, Mary Alice Richardson, and Grace Ellen
Miller have had the duty of collecting and editing the
school news for the "Sunbury News" and the "Delaware
Gazette." Each Tuesday these girls have had news
copy prepared for the local paper and about once a
month sent news to the "Delaware Gazette."

This is a worthwhile project because it puts news
of the school before the public.

The Big Walnut Band this year is composed of nine clarinets, two saxophones, seven trumpets, six altos, three
trombones, two baritones, two basses, two snare and one bass drum, one set of cymbals, one bell lyre, two flag
bearers, four drum majorettes and a head majorette. These band members are under the guidance of E. L. Hoke.
Since the members were not familiar with one another, they did not, until the later part of the year, elect officers.

The band played at six football games, two of which were away. They put on a special program at the half
of the Dad's Night and Homecoming games. One of the greater accomplishments of the year was the program pre-
sented at the Delaware County Basketball Tournament on February 16th. This was the night the Big Walnut
Basketball Team Played Berlin.

With the good beginning this year, everyone is looking forward to the improvement of the band for the year
1951-1952. Dayna Bricker, Nancy Brown, Grace Ellen Miller, and Russell Stockwell, the senior members, will be missed.

This group assisted in the special chapel programs given at Thanksgiving and Christmas in co-operation with
other organizations. The special event of this year was the Minstrel given by the Vocal Music Department on
March 30. Some of the members of this group made-up a girls' sextet which sang "In the Evening by the Moon-
light" and "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny." Joan Swayer was one of the End Women, and others participated in
different ways. Miss Prine accomplished a great deal with this group during the year.

The first homecoming of Big Walnut High School was a memorable one. It was held at the game with Ashley
on October 20. The Homecoming Queen and her court were elected a week before the game by student ballot. Mary
Alice Richardson was the retiring queen of 1949. Carole Southworth, Erlene Townley, Dayna Bricker, and Betty Bol-
ton were Attendants; and Evelyn Ulery, her Royal Majesty. The Queen and her court made a grand entrance be-
fore the flag raising ceremony of the game. Queen Evelyn presented each captain with a chrysanthemum and wished
each of them the best of luck.

At half-time the Retiring Queen, Mary Alice Richardson, crowned Evelyn, Homecoming Queen of 1950, while
the band formed a crown and played "America the Beautiful."

After the game the Queen and her court with their escorts reigned at the Homecoming dance at the school.
The auditorium was beautifully decorated in autumn colors by the Y-Teens who sponsored the dance. Lucky Lee
and his orchestra furnished the music for round and square dancing.

VARSITY CHEERLEADERS

Big Walnut High School is really proud of the four cheerleaders who worked so hard and distinguished
themselves by winning the Delaware County Cheerleading trophy. This honor is given on a judging at the first
appearance of a team at the tournament. It is based on their general floor appearance, which includes costumes,
organization, and the response of the cheering section to the cheerleaders.

The Big Walnut Football Team had the honor of winning the Mid-Buckeye League Championship for 1950. It
finished the season with a record of 7 wins and 2 losses. This is the best record ever compiled in the history of
football in this community.

The captain of the team, Ross Day, and Normand Townley were selected as members of the Mid-Buckeye con-
ference team. Normand was also as a guard on the All-Ohio Class B team. This was a great honor and
was the first time a boy from this community has gained it.

From the squad, eleven lettermen are graduating. This is taking away a lot of experience and ability, but it
is hoped that a tradition has been set for a new school of which everyone can be proud. The team members
would especially like to thank Coach Paul Keltner because, without his very capable leadership none of the honors
of a successful season would have been possible.

The Big Walnut Golden Eagles finished the season with a record of 13 wins and 11 losses. This is a better than
average season and quite a few of those losses were by a very close margin.

Big Walnut entered the county tournament as a definite threat. Berlin and Bellpoint fell by the wayside but
Ashley overpowered the Golden Eagles by a small margin and proceeded to win the championship and continue
into the state tournament. Big Walnut dropped into the Consolation bracket and by winning from Radnor, took that
trophy.

As third team representative to the district tournament at Westerville, the team lost a very close game to Gran-
ville after it had led all the way.

The joining of the Galena and Sunbury schools brought lots of complications to the basketball scene. However,
under the guidance of Coach Henry Furniss, the team progressed rapidly and enjoyed a satisfactory season. the
school was sorry to lose Coach Furniss by resignation after the season closed.

The team is losing four seniors, but with the eight returning varsity men, it is looking forward to a better season
next year.

Big Walnut's Reserve team, under the guidance of Coach Paul Keltner, finished the season with a record of five
wins and twelve losses. This does not appear to be a successful season, but the squad was mostly freshmen and
sophomores and several of the losses were by very small margins.

The team gained a lot of experience throughout the season and these boys will be good material for the
varsity next year.

The reserve cheerleaders gained experience during the season by leading the cheers at all reserve games.

The Junior High Basketball team wound up the season with a record of one win and three losses. The team
played Centerburg twice, and Westerville and Harlem once each.

The Junior High Tournament shows a better record. It was held in the Galena gym from March 12 to March 20.
The Big Walnut team was victorious over Ashley, Berlin, and Orange. Playing Ostrander in the final game, the
team won the County Junior High Championship by a score of 47 to 32. Coach Jack Groseclose and the junior high
basketball boys are to be congratulated on their championship team.

The Junior High Cheerleaders added to the picture of the tournament and gained valuable experience for their
years in high school.

School Secretary

top photo

Mrs. Tarpy, school secretary, has been a great help to
Superintendent Miller in his office. The reorganization of the
records of the two schools has been a big job. At times
when one of the teachers could not be present and a sub-
stitute could not be found, Mrs. Tarpy also served in that
capacity.

Janitors, Cooks and Bus Drivers

Victor Servais has been the high school janitor,
and Arthur Smith has been the grade school janitor
this year. They have served the students, teachers
and community in a great many ways. The Galena
janitors, Alva and Gordon Hancock, were not avail-
able on the day these pictures were taken. Their
keeping the buildings warm, repaired and clean dur-
int the year is appreciated.

The cooks pictured here have been the power
behind the hot lunches of the Junior High and Galena
Grade School. Their efforts are appreciated by all
those who patronize the school cafeteria.

The twelve bus drivers of Big Walnut School have turned out a fine record this year. They
have provided safe transportation for many school children through all the bad weather of
the winter.
