It is east of Berryville Virginia, In this house, called Audley, Nellie Custis-Lewis died. Why she left the splendid Mansion called "Woodlawn" close by Mt. Vernon I do not know. Washington was so pleased because his beloved step-granddaughter married his favorite nephew, Fielding Lewis he bestowed upon them 2500 acre, of his big plantation. I can't help wondering why they left it and went to Berryville, and this plain little house. It was said to be very lovely in the inside. I believe Nellie moved here after her husband died. Berryville is the home of ex Gov. Harry Byrd-Admiral Byrds ho. This is one of the greatest fruit sections in the U.S. I see it every once in a while- Aug 31 last time. Lord Cornwallis took it over for his headquarters when fighting in this section. He was living here at the time of his surrender. Gen Nelson ordered his soldiers to fire on it, even tho it was his home. Several bullets may be seen embedded in the walls. A woman of wealth has taken it on and restored it, as nearly as possible as in Colonial and Rev. War days. One dollar admission fee is charged. Proceeds go to charity. Couldn't get in the main building and weren't so very comfortable in the old bldg. so, after motoring a good bit the day of the 22nd and visiting a lot with the dear friends who had come nine hundred miles to be with us for a few days, while we had gone about five hundred miles to see them. Found comfortable rooms in a private home for them up town. Different people we talked with said we should go to the Indian powwow up the river a few miles. We had seen a number of Indian shows-mainly in Fla. which for the most part were more or less of a farce, but we went and were richly rewarded. The white chief surely knows how to stage a show. It was simply fine from start to finish. There were Indians from seven states- Mi.-Neb, Okla Kan, Iowa, Minn and California all dressed in their wonderful leather, head, feather etc took pickup We really were sorry when the show was over. Description An account of the resource Reached Kilbourne City, on the Dells of the Wisconsin Riv. quite in good time Thursday P. M. Aug 20. Chas. had attended the wedding of Brother Otis and Grace Schofield here in Aug. 1893- five months or less before we were married, Jan 4-1894. We rode up and down the main through fares, Chas. occassionaly spying some spot he recalled having seen 32 years previously. Finally we found Schofield place-for the most part unchanged all these years excepting a fine large house has been erected within recent years in the park-like yard- tho the old Schofield cottages still remain. We camped on beyond the Schofield place in the municipal camp. On the next afternoon we drove several miles to meet the Hatchards who came down from Winnipeg to meet us. Description An account of the resource Going to Devils Lake, just before reaching that body of water you go down a long winding hill and the scene in photo is on your left-showing in immediate foreground. Baraboo Golf Course and way off on the hillside the nice little city of Baraboo. Some of the Ringling Circus folk still live there. There are beautiful scenes in this region of Wisconsin. I believe this photo was snapped as we were leaving the lake region to go on thru Barraboo to Kilbourne City Left afternoon of 20th of Aug. for Kilbourne. I chose a route out of Baraboo that took us past the grave (roadside) of Yellow Thunder, famous Indian Chief and his squaw. Yellow Thunder history in this part of Wisconsin is very interesting. At one time he was chosen to go to the Great White Father in Washington to- intercede for his people. That "set up" Mrs Yellow Thunder considerably. Description An account of the resource Aug 18-1925 After breakfasting in Juliet started toward Wisconsin, a lovely drive thru a lot of nice towns had heard of. Roads fine and splendid. Not far from Chicago towns, Way up toward Madison there was a detour and we had trouble finding the right road. Pretty nearly ran out of road at one time, then had to go back a few miles but finally reached Madison, Wis. Drove about the city a little, stopping to visit a fine hotel where dinner was found in the basement. Learned the city camp is in a city Park on Lake- which we had passed going in. It is a large wooded park and has fine camping facilities. In the sunset glow on the water the dome of the capitol was reflected from shore to shore. The capitol is on a hill and the streets radiate from it like the spokes in a wheel. Night of Aug 8 was spent here with hundreds of other motorists. Vertical left side: State House in distance. There were cow herders as well, tho less numerous than the sheepherders. Often our road way was full of animals and we were obliged to drive most carefully to avoid hitting an animal.
