INTERESTING INFORMATION ABOUT YOURSELF AND FAMILY:
We are all still alive, in good health and get along great.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE:
I enjoy what I do too much to retire. Also, the people I
know that have retired haven't lived long after retirement.
That scares me!

COMMENTS: I would like to thank Carol and the entire
committee that has kept up with our class and planned our
reunions. This takes a lot of time and energy. I am sure we
all appreciate your efforts. THANKS! Bill [signature]

Nancy was involved this year in her high school reunion. (The Big 40), Upper
Arlington HS Class of 1960 & served on the committee to round up the grads from
around the world. I have been busy learning how to be retired after taking the leap
earlier this year.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: Nothing specific, expect that we plan to stay in the
Central Ohio (Columbus area) for the next few years, anyway, due to Nancy's trips to
her family business operations. My Mom is in a nursing home in Delaware.

Plans for the future- With continued good health, we plan to travel

Comments- Regarding the 50th reunion: Some years ago my
husband's reunion consisted of three graduating classes--one prior
and one after his class. He had such a great time since he had so
many friends from other classes. His was a great opportunity,
especially for those of us who never have the chance to see them as

we live so far away. The Friday night prior to the reunion his class
had a party of their own. Just a thought.</text>

6'10" and weighs about 265 (he outgrew me and is a lot
better looking)

Interesting information
I have started stone carving(abstract) and cut and polish
rocks, eg., bookends and centerpieces (fun to make a few
dollars). Wife, Sharon, and I enjoy searching the country
for rocks. My wife is retired health safety official, still
keeps up on personal health related issues. I keep working
out at the gym and Sharon walks miles.

Plans for the future
To travel and enjoy life after 40 years of work. Still feeling
relatively young. We plan to travel as much as money
allows and the mood strikes us. Australia, Canada, Alaska,
and Costa Rica are high on the list, but Brazil and South
American countries are also possibilities.
Comments
I do not know yet if we will make it there for the 45th so
I'm sending my best wishes to all of you via this note. Life
for me has been about family and friends (and that includes
all of you) when it's all said and done. Best of health and
happiness. Sincerely, Dave

I obtained my Insurance Agent license for Property & Casualty, Life and Health

to do a lot of things that Bob always took care of. I've become a real live Handyman.

so plan to do it this next year.

more of you will join us in planning for our celebration. We start meeting about a
year in advance and have a good time visiting, planning and working to make each
reunion a memorable one. If any of you from out of state have an idea or a comment,
please let some of us in the central Ohio area know, we need all the help we can get.</text>

MEMORIES OF SCHOOL DAYS AT GALENA
SCHOOL

By Marjorie Ross Day Lewis
with assistance from Gwen Walker Bailey

In September, 1943, we began school with Mrs. Naomi Terry as our teacher. Mrs.

Terry also taught the second grade. Other teachers that year included Miss Higgins

teaching third grade, Mrs. Sharp and Mrs. Gabriel each teaching one half year in the

fourth grade. Mrs. Kohberger taught fifth and sixth grades and Mrs. Gertrude Smith

taught seventh and eight that year in Galena School. Mr. Hoke taught music and Helen

Campbell taught Math.

We remember standing on the big register in the hall after the teachers moved off the

register to go to their rooms. Walkers remember their boots smelled like they were

melting.

PTA was really big with good attendance by parents and teachers.

We remember dancing around the Maypole on May Day.

We remember that we needed special gym shoes or socks to walk across the gym floor,

never our regular shoes.

Spelldowns, playground with swings, sliding board, teeter totter and a popular merry

go round are memories of Galena School. We played marbles, softball, tag, hide and

seek, red rover, crack the whip, and jump rope. Friday afternoons movies for a nickel

were shown if you had been good all week. This was a big deal before television.

We were the first Freshman Class in Big Walnut High School.

HARLEM SCHOOL MEMORIES

By Marjorie Ross Day Lewis with assistance
from Mary Kay Atwood Day and Alice Jane
Oldham Stauch

In the fall of 1943, our class began school with the following teachers at each grade

level: 1st and 2nd, Miss Severe; 3rd and 4th, Mrs. Alice Hicks; 5th and 6th, Mrs. Bernice

Freeman; 7th grade, Mrs. Reagnois; and 8th grade, Mrs. Weaver. We credit Mrs. Weaver

with our learning proper grammar. She used interesting and competitive games.

In ninth grade, we changed classes and shared the following teachers with the other

high school grades. Mr. DeLong, our superintendent, taught math. Mr. Bagley, our

principal, taught History and Government. Mrs. Reagnois taught English and Literature.

Mr. Griffith taught farming and was the FFA advisor. Mrs. Sharp taught home economics

and was the FHA advisor. Mrs. Grove was our cook and Mr. Schicks our custodian.

Mr. DeLong, our superintendent, and Mr. Bagley, our principal were coaches of all

sports for boys and girls. Harlem won county championships by including 7th, 8th, and 9th

graders.

During the polio epidemic our school was closed for eight weeks when we were in the

fourth grade. We had t o stay in our homes and could not leave our homes until after the

Christmas holidays. They counted on the freezing weather to kill the polio virus. One

child died and several were crippled from Harlem School, including George Haycook

from our class.

Harlem School had no playground equipment . The girls jumped rope. The boys

played ball and chased the girls trying to kiss them.</text>

In fifth grade, many of us were riding home from school on a bus driven by Norman

Cook. Mr. Cook was pinned in his seat, when a cab driver failed to stop at the stop sign

on Fancher Road at Miller-Paul Road and hit the bus. This now a four way stop. Bob

Atwood and Mary Lee Atwood, sitting in the back of the bus, got the emergency door

open. They helped all students, who were able to walk, out of the bus and went to the

first house north of the intersection to call for assistance. Many were injured but all

survived.

By sixth grade, some of us would sneak out the windows and door in the cloakroom,

and run up to Taylors General Store. Jim Taylor would call the school and report us and

we would return to school only to repeat it again another day.

Every February the Farmers Institute, a county event, would be held at Harlem

School. Harlem was blessed with wonderful cooks who brought in memorable food for

lunch on those days.

All students from seventh grade and up were allowed to ride the school bus to ball

games.

Eighth grade graduation was very special and the girls got to wear hose for the first

time.

Jim Lincoln read every book in the Harlem School Library.

In 1953, our class entered Big Walnut High School as sophomores. We loved the new

building on one floor, having our own lockers, and being the catalyst for the rivals

Galena and Sunbury.

MEMORIES OF SUNBURY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL,
BIG WALNUT JR. HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL DAYS

By Suzanne Jane Link Allen

In 1945, I entered Sunbury School in mid second grade when we moved from the
Kingston township farm to Sunbury. I had attended Brown School in first and part of
second grade.

My cousin, Doug Perfect, was the only person I knew in my class. Ruth Ann
Saunders, Joan Searles, and I soon became friends. I don't even remember the teacher's
name. Who else was there then?

My third grade teacher was Mrs. Betty Tippett. There were thirty-eight students in the
class. Gary Allen was in my class as were many friends, Ruth Ann, Joan, Glenna
Goodyear, Patty Baughman, Rose Ella McElroy ,Carol Myers, Joan Bailey, Wilma Bell,
Carol Mallernee, Janet Metzger, and Marie Swope. Boys in my class picture that year
were: Sheldon Stauch, Phil Cring, Bob Whisman, Dennis Nauman, Maurice Meeker plus
several others that moved.

Mrs. Lucille Graumlich taught our fourth grade class of forty-six students. Some of
my friends were: Patty Baughman, Wilma, and Bob. That year I received a Reading
Circle Award for reading a certain number of Reading Circle books.

During fourth grade, I portrayed a Northern Light in a play or operetta. We had costumes but no speaking parts, we must have been singing.

In fifth grade, my teacher was Mrs. Wilson and we were in the frame building. Mrs.
Wilson told us about many places that she had been in the world. I became interested in
learning about the world and enjoyed Social Studies class more. That year I joined the
band and learned to play the trombone.

Games we played were: hopscotch, jump rope, and softball. I looked forward to
recess and playing softball. Softball and band were halted when I fell playing ball and
broke my shoulder.

Sixth grade with Mr. Tippett was also held in the frame building. School seemed
fairly easy to me and I got good grades. I did not like to get up in front of the class or
answer questions aloud in class as I was still rather shy.

Mr. Crawford was my seventh grade teacher of a very large class on the second floor
of the school. We changed classes for the first time as I remember going to Mr.
Neilson's room for English. In band, I started playing the snare drum. Betty Tait and
Wanda Yerian were new friends in addition to the friends listed previously.

Eighth grade at Galena School was the first year of the consolidation of Sunbury and
Galena Schools. Mr. Hylen Souders was principal and one of my teachers. Gertrude
Smith was my homeroom teacher and Rolland Neilson, my English teacher. Mr. Noblett
was also a teacher there.

That year I became a cheerleader along with a new friend, Sondra Huey. We went to
quite a few basketball games (at Galena School and away). Other new friends were:
Rosalie Plummer, Lee Ellen Miller, Donna Potts, and Trudy Ross.

For our field day at Galena Park, I remember a fun day of games and a tug of war
across Big Walnut Creek. Some of us got wet.</text>

That year, we had an eighth grade graduation ceremony in the Galena gym. Mr.
Neilson had taught us several poems which we recited at the graduation ceremony.

At a brand new Big Walnut High School, I served as Freshman Class President. Since
I was still shy, this was a very difficult task for me. Our class sponsored a movie, "I was
a Male War Bride", counted tax stamps at our class advisor, Miss Helen Campbell's
house in Galena. She cooked a great spaghetti dinner for us. It wasn't as scary to be
around her then as it was in her World History class. In class you didn't dare blink an
eye, but I got an A in World History and on my project, Joan of Arc.

Joining us that year was Tommy Wood. Lee Ellen's Dad, Marvin Miller, was our
School Superintendent during our high school years.

A memorable incident that year was a gym class, where I was wearing a full skirt.
The task was to pitch a baseball and hit the target on the wall in the gym. Throwing with
a skirt on, caused the baseball to go toward the ceiling and through the window, breaking
it. I was embarrassed to death, but didn't have to pay for the window.

As sophomores, we got new classmates from the consolidation of Harlem School with
Big Walnut. New friends were: Carl and Donna Rush, Shirley Mullins, Darlene
Stambach, Martha Jones, and Alice Oldham.

That year a classmate, Robert Robbins died of pneumonia. My entire class went to the
funeral in Johnstown.

Our class held a scrap drive at Galena with Carl Rush driving his tractor and wagon for
us to load scrap metal on.

During that year, I served on the class steering committee. Also I was in Y-Teens,
FHA, tenth grade choir, and played the snare drum in the band. My friends participated
in many of the same activities.

As a junior, I was a cheerleader along with classmate Carol Higgins. It was fun going
to the games on a bus. Larry Anderson joined us from Medina. We became good friends
along with Susie Bergandine and Bob Bee.

The junior-senior prom was fun planning and decorating for. Miss Campbell was still
our class advisor and I helped her serve punch during the prom. We all dressed in formal
attire in our star-studded gymnasium.

As a junior, I was elected to the National Honor Society and attended an initiation
banquet at Ashley. Getting good grades was fairly easy for me except for Algebra and
Plane Geometry. Algebra was very difficult for me until about the middle of the year.
Estel Miller was my teacher for that and Mr. DeLong taught Plane Geometry which was
very difficult to understand. Mr. Souders taught my two-year Spanish class which I
enjoyed very much.

As a junior, I earned my FHA State Homemaker Degree. Mrs. Smart and Mrs. Peck
were my FHA advisors. One project for FHA was painting and decorating my room dark
blue at the farm. I served as FHA chapter treasurer and vice president. We got to go the
State FHA Convention in Columbus.

As a senior in high school, I served as art editor on the yearbook. Gwen Bailey and I
spent many hours working on it. Other activities were: Y-Teens, A Capella Choir with
Mrs. Jane McFarland, Band (played drums and saxophone) with Mr. Chaffin. Also as a
senior, I served as President of the National Honor Society, which I was inducted into as
a junior. Through many of my high school activities, I met friends and enjoyed doing the
activities with new and old friends, many who are still friends today.

For the senior prom, my date was Bob Newsom. After the prom, we went to the
Kingman Drive In movie, and then to Lee Ellen's house for breakfast. I wasn't used to
those night hours so I slept all day the next day. It was a fun evening with friends.

Graduation time finally came and we were all so happy. Mom and Dad as most
parents of my classmates, had a nice party after graduation.

BIG WALNUT HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI TIMES

After graduation, everyone went their separate ways, but every five or ten years, we
managed to get together again for class reunions. The early reunions were picnics such as
the one at Westerville Park.

The planning committee decided to try having the reunions in banquet form. Thirty-
six class members attended the Twenty-fifth Anniversary party at Mr. Tom's restaurant
in Sunbury on May 24, 1980. The cost was six dollars per person.

On August 13, 1988, the class held a thirty-third reunion at James Tavern in
Worthington with around twenty-five members in attendance.

In 1990, the reunion was held at the Marriott North in Columbus. There were thirty-
seven class members in attendance at the banquet with a brunch the next morning.

On July 22, 1995, our Class of 1955 Reunion was held at the Sheraton Suites Hotel in
Columbus with twenty-seven class members in attendance.

Finally on August 4-5, 2000, the Big Walnut Class of 1955 will celebrate our forty-
fifth anniversary of graduation from Big Walnut High School. On August 4, the banquet
will be at Embassy Suites in Columbus with a brunch the next morning. In the afternoon,
we'll tour our old high school which is now Big Walnut Middle School, the new Big
Walnut High School (opened in 1990), and the Don "Red" Edwards Big Walnut Track
Museum and then will go to Carol Myers Ranck's Westerville home for a picnic.

The planning committees for these reunions have had some fun times getting together
to plan the above reunions. It's been great to continue the friendships from high school
through the present which equals a fifty year period of friendships. There are just five
more years until our Golden Anniversary class Reunion.
